How good is Sainsbury's Bank home insurance?

Sainsbury’s Money scores 4.2 out of 5 on Trustpilot from more than 17,000 reviews - however, it no longer accepts new home insurance applications. It previously offered buildings, contents and combined cover through Home and Home Plus policies, with a guaranteed discount for Nectar members.

For policies underwritten by U K Insurance Limited, data from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) shows that 75-80%[2] of buildings-only and 80-85%[2] contents-only claims were accepted in 2024. These figures cover the insurer’s wider home insurance business.

Does Sainsbury's Bank offer contents insurance?

Sainsbury’s is no longer accepting new home insurance applications, but existing contents policies are still valid. Its cover was available separately or with buildings insurance, with Home and Home Plus levels offering up to £75,000 for contents and a £2,000 standard single-item limit.

Standard benefits include limited accidental damage to televisions and similar equipment, up to £15,000 for alternative accommodation and £2,000 of garden contents cover. Enhanced accidental damage and personal possessions cover could be added, while Home Plus also included home emergency and family legal protection.

What is included in Sainsbury’s Home Plus insurance?

Sainsbury’s Home Plus offers the core protection provided by its standard Home policy. This includes up to £1 million of buildings cover or £75,000 of contents cover, alternative accommodation and limited accidental damage to features such as fixed glass, ceramic hobs, televisions and games consoles.

The main additions are Home Emergency Cover and Family Legal Protection. Home emergency provides round-the-clock assistance for problems such as boiler breakdowns and blocked drains, while legal protection helps with eligible private disputes and includes access to a 24-hour legal helpline.

Home Plus doesn’t automatically include all of Sainsbury’s optional protection. Wider accidental damage and personal possessions cover for belongings taken away from home may still need to be added separately, depending on the policy.

Is Sainsbury’s Home Plus insurance worth it?

For an existing customer, Home Plus may offer reasonable value if home emergency and legal cover are both important. Buying them together within the policy may be simpler than arranging separate products, particularly if you want one point of contact for your main home insurance.

However, Home Plus doesn’t provide full accidental damage or away-from-home belongings cover as standard. Check the price of adding these separately, along with the emergency and legal limits, as a policy with several extras can become more expensive than expected.

Sainsbury’s no longer offers home insurance to new customers and stopped issuing renewal quotes from 1 November 2025. Existing cover remains valid until it ends, but customers should compare any replacement offered with policies from other insurers rather than judging Home Plus on its previous benefits alone.

Is Sainsbury's Bank the best company to insure my home with?

Which home insurer is best for you will depend on your own needs and circumstances. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of Sainsbury's Bank home insurance to help you make your decision:

  • Pros of Sainsbury's Bank home insurance

    • Sainsbury’s offers Home and Home Plus cover, with Home Plus including home emergency assistance and family legal protection as standard

    • Some accidental damage is included automatically, covering features such as fixed glass, sanitary ware, ceramic hobs, televisions and games consoles

    • The standard policy includes several useful extras, such as student belongings cover, household removals protection and an additional £7,500 of contents cover around special events

    • Its no-claims discount treats buildings and contents separately, so a claim under one section doesn’t automatically reduce the discount earned on the other

    • Nectar members receive a guaranteed discount when buying a new policy, while the online portal allows customers to make some policy changes without an administration fee

  • Cons of Sainsbury's Bank home insurance

    • Sainsbury’s is no longer accepting new home insurance customers, so the cover is only relevant to people with an existing policy - it stopped issuing renewal quotes from 1 November 2025, meaning existing customers will eventually need to move to a replacement provider or policy

    • The standard single valuable-item limit is £2,000, which may be restrictive for customers with expensive jewellery, watches, artwork or technology

    • Contents cover is limited to £75,000, compared with maximum limits of £100,000 from other providers

    • Wider accidental damage and personal possessions cover aren’t included automatically, so customers have to pay extra to protect most mishaps or belongings taken away from home

What other insurance does Sainsbury's Bank sell?

Alongside home insurance, Sainsbury's Bank offers a number of other insurance and money products:

Who underwrites Sainsbury’s home insurance?

Sainsbury’s home insurance was underwritten by a selected panel of insurers, rather than one company across every policy. The name of the insurer responsible for an existing policy is shown in the Policy Schedule.

Sainsbury’s is no longer accepting new home insurance applications, although existing policies remain valid until they end. Home emergency cover is provided separately by Collinson Insurance, a trading name of Astrenska Insurance Limited.

Can I pay Sainsbury’s home insurance in monthly instalments?

Yes, existing customers may pay through monthly instalments, although interest is added to the overall cost. Administration charges may also apply if payments are missed or certain changes are made to the policy.

Does Sainsbury’s home insurance cover subsidence?

Yes, buildings insurance covers damage caused by subsidence or heave of the land beneath the property, as well as landslip. Contents can also be covered when damaged by the same ground movement.

It doesn’t cover normal settlement, shrinkage or expansion, coastal or riverbank erosion, or damage arising from construction, structural alterations, defective materials or poor workmanship. Garages and other structures may only be covered when the main home is damaged at the same time.

Does Sainsbury’s home insurance cover home emergencies and boiler breakdowns?

Home emergency cover is included with Home Plus and was available as an optional extra with the standard Home policy. It covers emergencies including internal electrical failures, plumbing and drainage problems, security risks, pests and complete failure of the main heating or hot-water system.

Cover provides up to £1,000 per accepted claim for callout costs, labour, parts and materials, plus up to £250 for alternative accommodation. If an eligible boiler is beyond economical repair, the policy can contribute up to £500 towards a replacement, rather than paying the full cost.

Does Sainsbury’s home insurance cover belongings away from home?

Belongings away from home are only covered when optional personal possessions protection is shown in the Policy Schedule. It covers theft, accidental loss and accidental damage in the UK and during trips abroad lasting fewer than 60 consecutive days.

Mobile phones and bicycles can also be included, although individual limits, an excess and security conditions apply. Standard contents insurance still provides some limited cover for belongings temporarily removed from the home and for students living elsewhere in the UK.

Does Sainsbury’s home insurance cover gardens and outbuildings?

Yes, contents insurance includes up to £2,000 of garden contents cover, including plants, patio furniture, children’s play equipment and other outdoor belongings. Individual trees, shrubs and plants are covered up to £500 each against specified events such as fire, vandalism and theft.

Garages and domestic outbuildings form part of the insured home, although the maximum paid for theft of contents from them is shown in the Policy Schedule. Theft from an unlocked garage, shed or outbuilding isn’t covered, while belongings left outside are excluded from storm and flood claims.

What is the Sainsbury’s home insurance excess?

The amount depends on the policy and type of claim, so the definitive figures are shown in the Policy Schedule. Compulsory and voluntary excesses may both apply, while accidental damage, personal possessions, escape-of-water and subsidence claims can have different amounts.

When one incident results in a claim under both buildings and contents cover, only one excess is charged - whichever applicable excess is highest.
